President Joe Biden’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee are ramping up their strategy in favor of running against the “Make America Great Again” slogan and hard-line Republicans in general rather than focusing on the front-runner for the GOP nomination, former President Donald Trump.
Biden’s campaign and the DNC believe that they are in a strong position, equipped with extensive money and resources, going into the 2024 election. With this in mind, the Washington Examiner understands that they are focusing on attacking not just Trump but the entire field of Republican nominees, particularly as very few of them moderate their positions or deviate from the former president’s stances.

In a statement, DNC press secretary Ammar Moussa said: “With every passing day of the GOP primary, the 2024 Republican field lurches further right just to cater to the MAGA base. Poll after poll show how overwhelmingly unpopular and extreme Republicans’ positions are — from wanting to ban abortion nationwide and handing out tax breaks to the ultra wealthy, to ending Social Security and Medicare as we know it and siding with Vladimir Putin over our allies — yet 2024 Republicans have only tripled down on pandering to the far-right.”
“Whoever comes out of this dumpster fire of a primary to become the GOP nominee, will only have done so by being the most MAGA and alienating millions of voters who aren’t buying what Republicans are selling,” he said.
Democrats are notably attacking their GOP opponents earlier than ever before, whereas in the past, they might have waited until the summer ahead of the election when a Republican nominee emerged.
A treasure trove of resources allows them to do so, with Biden and the DNC announcing a more than $72 million fundraising haul in the second quarter of 2023.
One example of this strategy in action is the placement of staffers in early primary states ahead of visits from relatively unlikely GOP nominees, who are polling in the single digits.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) is polling at 2% nationally, but Democrats are addressing the possibility of a Scott nomination early on with communications staffers in place ahead of his campaign visits to spread awareness to voters about what they believe to be extreme positions that don’t deviate from those of Trump.
The Democratic apparatus is confident that no one will clinch the GOP nomination without subscribing to many of the positions taken by Trump, which it considers extreme. In this case, campaigning against “MAGA” or hard-line right-wing stances puts Biden in a position to campaign against the eventual nominee before they are even selected.
