President Joe Biden and First lady Jill Biden departed the White House Tuesday night for an unscheduled trip to Wilmington, Delaware.
Though White House officials declined to offer comment on the reason for Biden’s trip, the president told reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews that he is going “to vote” in the state’s primary Tuesday night. Both Bidens are expected to return to the White House late Tuesday evening after casting their votes.
FIRST LADY SAYS SHE AND BIDEN HAVEN’T YET TALKED ABOUT RUNNING AGAIN IN 2024
There is only one contested statewide primary on Delaware’s ballot Tuesday evening. State auditor Kathleen McGuiness is fending off a challenge from lawyer Lydia York in the state’s Democratic primary. The state Democratic party endorsed York after a jury found McGuiness guilty of campaign finance violations over the summer.
The winner will face off against Republican Janice Lorrah.
Biden frequently heads to his two Delaware homes for weekends, but he has also previously made a number of unscheduled trips to the “first state.” Before entering office, he made an off-schedule trip from Rehoboth, DE to Wilmington for followup doctors appointments.
The president additionally spent an evening attending funeral services for a close friend during a previously unscheduled trip back in 2021.
