HBO host Bill Maher predicted on Friday night that the criminal indictment of former President Donald Trump will “set off this cycle of revenge.”
“It’s almost Greek tragedy-like because you set off this cycle of revenge like The House of Atreus. And I guarantee you when Biden is out of office, Day Two, they will try to arrest him,” Maher said as he began his panel discussion.

He added, “I always ask myself the question, ‘What is actually better for the future of the country and my future?’ Because I don’t want to live in a country where we are one of these places where whoever is president, as soon as they get out of office, they go after them.”
Maher asked his panel of Republican Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Tablet Magazine columnist James Kirchick for their take on the former president’s indictment on his HBO show Real Time with Bill Maher.
“Everybody deserves due process. We don’t even know what the charges are,” Sears said. “I think what my grandmother said, ‘be careful that you don’t dance on the grave of your enemy because you may fall in.’ Let’s just wait and see what plays out.”
“I think the tragic part of this is that there are three other investigations going on right now, all of them far more serious than paying off a porn star,” Kirchick interjected.
Kirchick cited the investigations into the former president’s role on Jan. 6, his Mar-a-Lago documents, and his handling of the Georgia election results as more serious investigations.
Maher said this indictment “unites Republicans” and will “make him the nominee.”
The HBO host joked that now Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is going to be begging to be arrested like Trump.
Earlier in Maher’s show, he interviewed Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) and asked him about Trump’s indictment.

Sununu called the indictment “a circus” but predicted the former president wouldn’t be the nominee in the 2024 election. Maher disagreed and shared that he believed Trump would be the Republican nominee but doesn’t think he will win.
“I love you. I’m a big fan. But you are dead wrong. He is not going to be the nominee,” Sununu said to Maher.
