Former CNN anchor and liberal media personality Brian Stelter attempted to argue that former President Donald Trump’s recent interview with Tucker Carlson was a flop despite it raking in more than 200 million views on X.

“I think this was a total flop,” Stelter said on MSNBC following the interview and the first Republican debate. “I think that’s what’s most interesting, not the contents of the interview, which were the usual recycled conspiracy theories and lies.”

Trump was attempting to counterprogram the debate to snatch attention away from his opponents, and it did not work, according to Stelter.

“Nothing changed Trump’s status as the GOP front-runner last night,” he said. “He is still clearly the front-runner, but, you know, both of these men, Tucker and Trump, they both want to seem independent, free of the RNC, free of Fox, and that is appealing to their base audience.”

However, by the end of the debate, it was as if the Trump interview “never happened,” according to Stelter.

“It was irrelevant, and now, this morning, Trump and Carlson fans are trying to claim that the interview was widely viewed, it was more popular than the debate, but that is bologna,” he said.

“Twitter view counts are widely overstated. So, the truth was this interview was an afterthought.”
