Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) announced that he will run for speaker of the House.
House Republicans have paralyzed themselves over the past few weeks. They’ve been unable to find a new speaker following the ousting of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the position. Subsequent efforts to replace him with House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) have failed. Donalds is now presenting himself as a candidate.

“As a member of this conference, I’ve seen firsthand the devotion of my colleagues to improving the lives of their constituents and the future of America,” he wrote in a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter.
“We come from different walks of life but share the common pursuit of a more perfect union,” he added. “As speaker, every voice in our conference will have a seat at the table to ensure our unity and consensus on the legislative battles we face.”
While stressing his ability to hear out his more centrist colleagues, Donalds also touted his conservative credentials.
“My sole focus will be securing our border, funding our government responsibly, advancing a conservative vision for the House of Representatives and the American people, and expanding our republican majority,” he added.

The Florida Republican also mentioned a number of records he would set if elected, such as being the first black speaker and first speaker from Florida.
Donalds is seen as one of the more conservative members of Congress, meaning he will face difficulty winning over centrist Republicans. Having only served in Congress for three years so far, he will also face scrutiny over his level of experience.
