Two California Republicans defeated their Democratic challengers Monday, moving the GOP closer to controlling the U.S. House.

Incumbent Reps. Ken Calvert (R) and Michelle Steel (R) fended off their Democratic challengers, keeping California’s 41st and 45th congressional districts in Republican control.

Calvert won reelection to the U.S. House for California’s 41st Congressional District.

The incumbent Representative faced Democrat Will Rollins in the Nov. 8 midterm elections. With 80% of the votes in, Calvert had a 5,500 vote lead over Rollins, the Associated Press reported.

Calvert was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and serves as dean of the California Republican Delegation.

Steel defeated Democrat Jay Chen to continue serving California’s 45th Congressional District. With 69% of the votes counted as of Monday night, Steel had 53.8% to Chen’s 46.2%, the Associated Press reported.

“I am humbled to continue to fight for this community in Congress,” Steele tweeted, thanking the voters in her district. “Thank you to the voters of #CA45 for putting your trust in me. Let’s get to work.”

Steele was first elected in 2021, defeating Democrat Harley Rouda. She serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Education and Labor.

Nearly a week after Election Day, 10 House races are still outstanding in California.

The tightest race remaining in California is for the open seat in District 13 where Democrat Adam Gray has a 761-vote lead over Republican John Duarte with nearly 80% of the votes counted, according to the Associated Press.

To control the House, Republicans need 218 seats. They currently hold 217, with Democrats holding 205.
