The police force tasked with defending the U.S. Capitol complex is reportedly looking for a roughly 14% increase to its budget for the upcoming year.
The U.S. Capitol Police is requesting $840 million in funds for 2024, per a report from CBS News, as the budget for the agency has ballooned in recent years.

Lawmakers gave the police force a $734.58 million budget for the fiscal 2023 budget, which was a $132 million increase from the previous year’s budget, which was allocated after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
Rep. Mark Amodei (R-NV), who serves as chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch, told the outlet there would be “back and forth” and that the request from the Capitol Police would be reviewed. He asserted the department’s importance but also vowed against a blank check for the police force.
Capitol Police has been under scrutiny and pressure in recent years, with the Capitol riot in 2021 injuring several officers and lawmakers and their families under increased threat.
Since the 2021 riot, the police force changed many procedures and has been equipped with new shields, helmets, and batons. The police department has also been under scrutiny for how unsecured the Capitol complex was on the day of the riot and for lack of transparency in the aftermath of the riot.

The Capitol Police was established in 1828 and said it employs 2,300 officers who protect Congress and the public at the Capitol complex in Washington.
A House Appropriations Committee subcommittee hearing on the budget for the Capitol Police for the upcoming year, in which the request is reportedly set to be made, is scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m.
