Carl Bernstein encouraged the Justice Department to seek charges against former President Donald Trump for his role in the Capitol riot and his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Bernstein, who was appearing alongside fellow Watergate sleuth Bob Woodward, if he believes the Justice Department will indict Trump after watching all the hearings held by the Jan. 6 committee this year.

BOB WOODWARD CALLS TRUMP AN ‘UNPARALLELED DANGER’

“I have no crystal ball, but what’s very clear is that the proof is there already just in terms of what the January 6 committee has developed,” Bernstein said. “And hopefully we have an attorney general and a system in place in a Justice Department that will allow the indictment of a former president of the United States for his crimes against the United States,” he added. “No president has ever committed these kinds and level of crimes against the United States.”

Several months ago, Woodward and Bernstein got together again and were published by the Washington Post ahead of when the House committee investigating the Capitol riot held the first in a series of summer hearings. They argued then, with a focus on Jan. 6, that Trump had surpassed Richard Nixon as the poster child of corruption, calling Trump the first “seditious” president.

Trump, who has denied responsibility for the Capitol riot, engaged in a “deception that exceeded even Nixon’s imagination,” they wrote, referring to the 45th president’s efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.

Woodward is back on the air promoting his new audiobook, The Trump Tapes, which includes the release of eight hours of recorded interviews with Trump and people in his orbit. He now says that Trump is “dangerous” and a “threat to democracy.” The audiobook is set for an Oct. 25 release.
