Matt Rhule became the first head coach fired in the 2022 NFL season after the Carolina Panthers announced they have parted ways with the third-year coach on Monday.

Rhule was fired five weeks into the season after starting with a 1-4 win-loss record, his overall record with the team during his tenure was 11-27.

When asked about job security at a press conference following the Panther’s 37-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Rhule did not have an answer.

“I have nothing to say about that now. I’m really just here to talk about the game. I would never want to make this about me,” Rhule said.

Rhule was widely considered to be in trouble of getting fired going into the season, with Odds Shark giving him the best odds of being the first coach fired during the season in August.

Defensive pass game coordinator Steve Wilks was announced as the interim head coach. Wilks previously served as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in 2018, where he lead the team to a 3-13 record.
