An unidentified person exited a black truck that had approached a group of people gathered near East Garfield Park around 1:45 a.m. local time and began opening gunfire, police said, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

So far, there are no reports of anyone being taken into custody for the shooting, and the motivation behind the attack is not clear.

The shooting victims ranged in age from 32 to 40 and had been taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, the outlet reported. The incident took place at the 2700 block of West Jackson Boulevard.

There have been at least three other mass shootings in the area since the end of April, according to the newspaper.

Shooting incidents in Chicago appear to be down relative to last year, according to data from the Chicago Police Department. From the start of the year until July 22, there have been 1,422 shootings. This marks a 19% decrease from the 1,758 shootings reported during the same time frame in 2021, per the department.
