Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie avoided the question of a nationwide ban on abortion.
Christie appeared on Meet the Press on Sunday, where he reacted to the news of Gov. Ron DeSantis signing a six-week abortion ban. Host Kristen Welker asked Christie if he would sign a similar ban if elected president.

“I think each state should make their own decision, Kristen,” Christie said. “I think that that’s what Dobbs was all about was letting each state and each people make their own decision.”
Welker pressed Christie further, asking him if he would sign a six-week ban while he was governor.
“With my Democratic legislature in New Jersey, no ban would have come to my desk Kristen. So it’s a ridiculous question with all due respect,” Christie said. “I’m not going to get into hypotheticals.”
The former governor committed to not instating a federal mandate on abortion if elected.

Meanwhile, Christie’s opponent, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, received an impromptu endorsement from former Republican Party of Iowa executive director Marlys Popma, a well-known anti-abortion activist in the state, during an Iowa forum this week. Haley reaffirmed her own abortion stance during the third GOP debate, saying the party should “save as many babies as possible and support as many moms as we can.”
Christie is one of seven Republican candidates for president. He claims he has qualified for the fourth GOP debate.
