Comedian Chris Rock broke his silence on the slap he received from Will Smith, saying the actor became violent over “the nicest joke I ever told.

Rock was on a brief break from his Ego Death Tour to join fellow comedian Dave Chappelle in Liverpool, England’s M&S Arena on Thursday. The comedian was last in the United Kingdom as part of his tour but told audiences he was “still kind of processing” the event, much to the disappointment of those who flooded his performances following the slap.

“Did that s*** hurt?” Chappelle reportedly asked Rock onstage about the slap.

“G****** right,” Rock replied. “The m*********** hit me over a b******* joke, the nicest joke I ever told.”

Chappelle went on to speculate that the true Smith came out that night at the Academy Awards.

“Will did the impression of a perfect person for 30 years, and he ripped his mask off and showed us he was as ugly as the rest of us,” Chappelle said, a spokesperson confirmed to the Washington Examiner. “Whatever the consequences are … I hope he doesn’t put his mask back on again and lets his real face breathe. I see myself in both men.”

As a result of Smith’s altercation with Rock, sparked by a joke Rock made about Smith’s wife, Smith would go on to resign from the academy, which would ban him from the awards ceremony for 10 years. Smith would later apologize on Instagram days later and on YouTube over three months later.

Rock made another joke about the invitation while performing at Phoenix’s Arizona Financial Theatre on Sunday. He compared the academy’s alleged hosting offer to the late Nicole Brown Simpson, saying going back to the award ceremony was similar to Simpson being asked “to go back to the restaurant” where she infamously went to retrieve some eyeglasses she had left the night she was murdered.

His Ego Death tour, which began in April, is Rock’s first tour in five years. It commenced a month after he was slapped. While Rock is in the U.K. this Labor Day weekend and the week after, his tour is set to continue in the United States on Sept. 16.
