CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin noted former President Donald Trump’s “louche” lifestyle as being a quality conservatives overlooked when they backed him.
Toobin, whose own life decisions have been sources of controversy, did so Friday as he answered a question from anchor Wolf Blitzer about the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and ending the nationwide right to an abortion.
MAXINE WATERS URGES PEOPLE TO ‘DEFY’ SUPREME COURT AFTER ABORTION RULING
“This is what Justice [Samuel] Alito has felt for many years. It’s what Justice [Clarence] Thomas felt for many years, and Donald Trump when he ran for president, he said, ‘I am going to appoint justices to the court who will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade,'” Toobin said, noting the conservative majority formed with the help of Trump’s three picks: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.
“This has been a goal of the conservative movement for many years,” Toobin added. “This is the reason why conservatives stood by Donald Trump despite all the scandals, despite his louche personal life. They got what they wanted out of the Trump presidency today.”

Toobin is known to have knocked up a mistress in 2008, according to the New York Times, and pressured her, unsuccessfully, to have an abortion, per sources of the New York Daily News. This was followed by a legal fight over custody of the baby and child support. More recently, he was suspended by CNN after exposing himself to his co-workers at New Yorker magazine on a Zoom call. Toobin returned to CNN in June 2021.
Trump has his share of controversy too. Dozens of women have accused him of sexual misconduct, claims that Trump has denied. He is also under intense scrutiny now as investigators in Congress, the Justice Department, and Georgia examine his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results as well as the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
