Congressional Republicans flocked to Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s (R-AL) aid in his blocking of Department of Defense promotions in protest of its abortion access push.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) came out in support of Tuberville on Wednesday, defending his move on the Senate floor. In the ensuing days, Lee was joined by several GOP senators and representatives, including Sens. Roger Marshall (R-KS), Deb Fischer (R-NE), John Thune (R-SD), Ted Budd (R-NC), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Steve Daines (R-MT), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Joni Ernst (R-IA).

“The Biden administration is exploiting the United States military to pursue their radical abortion agenda,” Marshall told Townhall. “Republicans must hold the line. At a time when our military is struggling to fill its ranks and replenish weapons stockpiles, our national security resources and American tax dollars should not be used to pay for service members and their dependents to travel to get abortions. Sen. Tuberville is standing up for what is right, and I am proud to support him in his efforts against this illegal policy.”
Thune said: “I agree [with Tuberville] that the Department of Defense’s policy is atrocious, and it is a departure from decadeslong understanding of federal public policy.”
Tuberville also received support from House Republicans, with Reps. Barry Moore (R-AL), Michael Cloud (R-TX), Dan Bishop (R-NC), Mike Johnson (R-LA), and Chip Roy (R-TX) voicing support.
“Thank you, @SenTuberville, for standing up for American taxpayers, who are being forced to fund abortion through the DoD,” Moore tweeted. “As threats against our country continue to grow, the DoD should be focused on protecting Americans instead of being an abortion travel agency.”

“Good for @SenTuberville. This is a rare example of courage in Washington,” Bishop tweeted.
Democrats, meanwhile, condemned the move, saying it hurts women and endangers national security.

“But now the senator from Alabama is intentionally politicizing our military. And you all can stand there all you want and say you’re not politicizing. Oh, really? I beg to differ. By blocking numerous promotions simply because he is upset that the DOD is doing its part to protect our service members and addressing their needs,” Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) said on Wednesday.
“Our service members, our women have a need to access appropriate reproductive care,” she added. “Now, this wasn’t an issue before because, guess what? We didn’t have a Supreme Court that upended almost 50 years of a constitutional right that women in this country had.”
