Singer and songwriter Lee Greenwood rejected leftist attacks on Jason Aldean’s “Try That In A Small Town” song and music video, saying that the art is a call to return to small-town values that preserve freedom.

“I am a Jason Aldean fan. He is the biggest patriot, like a lot of us. It has nothing to do with racism,” Greenwood told Jesse Watters Primetime. “This is about people trying to take away the freedom of expression. It is a great song. I wish I had it.”

“When the video was first promoted, you had to listen to the lyrics of the song first before you looked at the video,” Greenwood continued. “It’s about a small-town flavor. I am from a small town in California, and you know what? People cannot take our freedom away because people know everybody in a small town. That’s what the heart of America is, is rural America. You can’t take freedom away.”

Amid the controversy of the music video, Aldean is scheduled to perform for the victims’ families and community of the Nashville’s Covenant School shooting that took place in March. While some have called for Aldean to step away from the benefit concert in August, Greenwood said he fully supports him.

Greenwood pointed out that the song’s lyrics do not mention guns and suggested that attacks on the Second Amendment are uncalled for.

“When you talk about having guns and having them in your home for defense, it’s not about an offensive weapon. It’s about hunting. It’s about having the right to have the gun. And the people that are on the other side of that, you know — it’s the idiots that take to the street and kill other people,” Greenwood said. “We are sympathetic of the people who died. Our hearts go out to those people who have been killed by guns, but it is the people who kill with the gun; it is not the gun itself. I am so sorry that they put the Second Amendment first when they see a tragedy like that. I am grateful for Jason Aldean and what he is about to do.”

Greenwood also noted that liberals’ attempts to expand gun control are because “they want to take away our freedom.”

“You know, it’s precious,” he added. “And when I talk about freedom, I talk about the military that have died for our freedom. Let’s not get entangled about what the song says because the song doesn’t say anything except for the fact we take care of each other in a small town. That’s all. It’s really simple.”
