Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) asserted on a podcast Wednesday that elected officials who have publicly said they could overturn the 2020 election knew it was not possible.

Crenshaw stated it was “people just willing to say anything to get attention” on an episode of his podcast, Hold These Truths.

“It was always a lie. The whole thing was always a lie. And it was a lie meant to rile people up,” Crenshaw said.

He also claimed he would confront lawmakers and “political personalities” over the talk of overturning the election and they would confess they knew it was a lie, even saying there were “arguments behind closed doors in the Republican Party before” the public declarations of being able to overturn the 2020 election.

“So I was like, ‘What the hell are we doing?’ And I would tell that to people kinda behind closed doors too. Especially a lot of the rabble-rousers, like the political personalities, not even the politicians,” Crenshaw said. “But even just the others, they’re like, ‘Yeah, we know that, but we just, you know, people just need their last hurrah. Like, they just need to feel like we fought one last time. Trust me, it’ll be fine.’ And I was like, ‘No, it won’t. That’s not what people believe, and that’s not what you’re telling them.'”

Crenshaw has not shied away from talking down fellow Republicans, calling some members of the House Freedom Caucus “grifters” last year.

He has also distanced himself from challenges to the 2020 election despite being one of the members who signed on to an amicus brief in 2020 urging the Supreme Court to overturn results in some key background states.
