The escaped prisoner was captured by police in Chester County, Pennsylvania, a day after police confirmed that he was armed, with a rifle he stole from a garage.

Cavalcante, 34, is a Brazilian national who was convicted in August of first-degree murder for the death of his former girlfriend Deborah Brandao and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole shortly after. He is also wanted in Brazil for different murder charges.

The lengthy manhunt began after he escaped from prison on Aug. 31 by “crab-walking” up a wall in the exercise yard. Cavalcante was the second person to escape from the prison this year, after an inmate escaped in a similar manner but was captured within minutes of escaping.

“I think he is just trying to survive and avoid being captured right now,” Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Cavalcante had been spotted several times while at-large, including in an incident where he stole the rifle causing the homeowner to shoot at him with a pistol. State police had offered a reward of up $25,000 for any information that would lead to the arrest of Cavalcante.
