“The Olympic torch is already lighting up our city,” Garcetti said.
The dates for the 2028 Paralympics, for athletes with physical disabilities, were also announced at the press conference. The 2028 Paralympics will be held from Aug. 15-27, 2028, also in Los Angeles.
LA28 Chief Athlete Officer Janet Evans touted the announcement in a statement Monday.
“Today marks the official countdown to the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” she said. “The LA28 Games will be unlike any other, showcasing the best of Southern California’s exceptional stadiums and world-class culture to athletes and fans alike.”
The opening ceremony on July 14, 2028, is scheduled to be held simultaneously in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the Southern Cal Trojans play college football, and at SoFi Stadium, where the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers play.
The Games will be the first held in the United States since Salt Lake City hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002, and they will be the first Summer Olympics held in the U.S. since those held in Atlanta in 1996
