David McCallum, the man best known for his roles in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and NCIS, died Monday at the age of 90.

His last moments were spent at New York Presbyterian Hospital with family, and he died from natural causes, CBS said, adding in a statement, “David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world. He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away.”

McCallum, hailing from Scotland, found success in the late 1950s and ’60s in films such as A Night to Remember, The Great Escape, and The Greatest Story Ever Told. But it was The Man From U.N.C.L.E. that made him a household name, his mysterious Illya Kuryakin becoming a fan favorite.

While securing roles in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, McCallum did not find another breakthrough until NCIS began in 2003. His role playing Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, the investigative team’s chief medical examiner, made him one of the most popular television characters once again.

McCallum was not just an actor but a musician, too, with fans of his taking to social media to recognize him for his contributions as an artist, even, certainly surprising to many, in the rap genre.

The X (formerly Twitter) account home to NCIS and all of its offshoots posted a touching message in memory of McCallum. It was a sentiment shared by a bevy of fans on the social media platform.

“David was a gifted actor and author, and beloved by many around the world. He led an incredible life, and his legacy will forever live on through his family and the countless hours on film and television that will never go away,” the NCISverse wrote. “We will miss his warmth and endearing sense of humor that lit up any room or soundstage he stepped onto, as well as the brilliant stories he often shared from a life well-lived. Our hearts go out to his wife Katherine and his entire family, and all those who knew and loved David.”
