Democrat Trayon White Sr. of the DC Council said he wants the National Guard to come to his city after three people were fatally shot and two others were wounded in his district Saturday night.
“We need the National Guard in D.C.,” White said. “The crime is out of control and getting worse by the day. Kids and innocent people are getting killed. It’s becoming status quo with no end in sight.”

White’s comments come as crime has been escalating in the city.
Thirteen people were killed in 10 shootings so far in August, which pushes the total homicide number to at least 158 homicides this year. That is an increase of about 22% since last year, making 2023 the deadliest year in two decades.
In July, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser nominated Pamela A. Smith as the first black woman to serve as the new chief of the Metropolitan Police Department. Smith says she has been sending law enforcement to high-crime areas to tackle the rising violence in the city.
Three men were shot in Adams Morgan, just two blocks from bars and restaurants, on Saturday. Two men died and one is critically wounded. Three more people were shot and killed in Southeast Washington, totaling six deaths on Saturday in the city.
Television host Greta Van Susteren reacted on Sunday, expressing how she couldn’t understand how the city leaders have let it get “so violent.
“I do not understand our DC leaders and the federal government here. DC has gotten so violent. We had 6 murders last night….why won’t our leaders (DC and Fed) who themselves have security protect the citizens of DC? Isn’t that their job?” she said on social media.

“Greta, this is so easy. Allow gun violence to inspire more calls for gun control — whatever the cost,” one social media user said to her. “‘DC leaders’ are willing to expend Black lives for the cause of eliminating the Second Amendment, and implement gun confiscation.”
