The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan on Friday was met with celebratory reactions from conservatives, while those on the Left responded with disdain.

In a 6-3 ruling, the Supreme Court ruled against Biden’s plan to wipe away $400 billion in student debt, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing the majority opinion in the case Biden v. Nebraska.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was quick to assure those upset by the decision that loan forgiveness was still a possibility.

“It is very important to note this SCOTUS ruling does NOT remove Biden’s ability to pursue student loan forgiveness,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “The Biden Admin can use the HEA (Higher Ed Act) — our position from the start – to continue loan forgiveness before payments resume. They should do so ASAP.”

Ocasio-Cortez also blasted what she saw as a double standard between Friday’s Supreme Court decision and moves made by former President Donald Trump.

“Just last year, DOE forgave $6 BILLION for defrauded students. Trump completely wiped out debt for disabled veterans. Neither program was challenged nor overturned,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We still have the power to cancel and must use it, or we’re looking at an economic crisis for millions of people.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) also suggested the fight for student loan forgiveness was not over, tweeting: “More than 40 million hard working Americans are waiting for the help that President Biden promised them, and they expect this administration to throw everything they’ve got into the fight until they make good on this commitment.”

Shortly after the high court’s decision was announced, former Vice President and current Republican presidential candidate Mike Pence praised the decision, saying Biden’s plan was “an egregious violation of the Constitution.”

“Joe Biden’s massive trillion-dollar student loan bailout subsidizes the education of elites on the backs of hardworking Americans, and it was an egregious violation of the Constitution for him to attempt to do so unilaterally with the stroke of the executive pen,” Pence said in a statement. “I am pleased that the Court struck down the Radical Left’s effort to use the money of taxpayers who played by the rules and repaid their debts in order to cancel the debt of bankers and lawyers in New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.”

Pence also noted that he was “honored to have played a role in appointing three of the Justices that ensured today’s welcomed decision.”

Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) also released a video contrasting his approach to education and the job force with that of Biden.

“Joe Biden wants you to pay off the student loans of lawyers and professors. I want to strengthen vocational education and apprenticeships,” Scott said. “We need more welders, carpenters and electricians. These are the jobs that built America, and these are the jobs liberal elites can’t ship to China.”

“College isn’t the only path to the American dream, and it’s time for a president who values hard work and the people who do it,” he added.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy also praised the decision, tweeting: “The 87% of Americans without student loans are no longer forced to pay for the 13% who do.”

The decision comes as a nearly three-year moratorium on student loan payments will end, with interest beginning to accrue again on Sept. 1 and payments due again beginning in October.
