Former President Donald Trump railed against his indictment and arrest Tuesday night from Mar-a-Lago, saying the United States is “going to hell.”

The former president pleaded not guilty earlier in the day at his arraignment in New York City. He portrayed himself as a vigorous defender of the country. The fiery statements were Trump’s first since turning himself in to authorities on Tuesday.

Trump became the first U.S. president in history to be criminally indicted Thursday.

“The only crime I’ve committed is to furiously defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it,” he told a crowd of cheering supporters.

“Our country is going to hell,” he added. Trump described his time since his exit from office as “the most embarrassing time in our country’s history, in my opinion.”

Trump was arrested and arraigned on Tuesday. He was charged with 34 counts of business fraud and is not expected in court again until December.
