Former national security adviser John Bolton recommended that his former boss Donald Trump shut down his presidential campaign amid the criminal charges against him.
“Donald Trump should immediately withdraw as a candidate for president. Criminal charges are piling up around him,” Bolton tweeted, likely also referring to another indictment from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg regarding alleged hush money payments made to cover up extramarital affairs before the 2016 election.
“If Trump truly stood for America First policies, he would support the rule of law instead of continually flouting it. Withdraw now!”

Trump is currently facing off against Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, former Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), political commentator Larry Elder, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy in the race to win the GOP presidential nomination. The latest indictment against the former president includes 37 federal charges surrounding accusations that Trump mishandled classified documents after leaving the White House.

The first indictment against Trump “distressed” Bolton because, in his own words, it was “even weaker than I feared it would be.” Trump pleaded not guilty to all 34 counts in Manhattan and continues to deny wrongdoing as alleged in the federal charges.

Bolton is considering his own bid for the presidency in 2024. Bolton said in December that Trump as the Republican nominee would be “unacceptable.” He has been a critic of Trump since he departed his role in the administration in 2019.
Trump is set to appear in court on Tuesday, June 13, at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
