“No one is above the law — including Donald Trump. This indictment must now play out through the legal process, without any outside political or ideological interference,” the leaders said in a joint statement. “We encourage Mr. Trump’s supporters and critics alike to let this case proceed peacefully in court.”

Special counsel Jack Smith unsealed an unprecedented indictment Friday, alleging Trump unlawfully kept classified documents — including on nuclear secrets and military vulnerabilities — and stored the sensitive material in boxes in his bathroom, shower, and elsewhere in his Florida home. The 37-count indictment accuses Trump of risking some of the country’s most sensitive security secrets after leaving office in 2021.

The top two Democrats in Congress utilized similar language when they responded to an indictment of the former president in April, when he pleaded not guilty to unrelated criminal charges that he falsified business records in connection with a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) have not responded to the latest indictment. The top two Republicans in the upper chamber have made no secret about their desire to move past the former president, a stark contrast to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who has embraced Trump and even credited the former president for helping him secure the speaker’s gavel.
