Smith’s glance toward Trump on Thursday came the second time the two appeared in a courtroom together, with the other instance being in a federal courthouse in Miami, Florida, after Trump was arraigned on charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. In the classified documents case, Smith is also the lead prosecutor.
Trump pleaded not guilty to the four charges levied against him in the federal court in Washington. The charges against the former president included conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
The next hearing in the 2020 election case is scheduled for Aug. 28 before Judge Tanya Chutkan after the arraignment was presided over by Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya.

Trump’s arraignment in Washington on Thursday marks the third time this year he has appeared before a court after being indicted. The former president’s first arraignment was in Manhattan in April after being indicted on charges related to the falsification of business records for alleged hush money payment, and the second arraignment was in Miami in June after he was indicted on charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
The former president is widely expected to be indicted in Fulton County, Georgia, in the coming weeks on different charges related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump lost the 2020 election, and the state of Georgia, to now-President Joe Biden.
