A court in the Netherlands rejected claims from a town that Twitter did not do enough to remove messages related to an unfounded satanic pedophilia conspiracy theory.

The Amsterdam District Court found that Twitter has done enough to remove content surrounding the conspiracy theory about the town of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk from its site, though it did say that the company must respond to a request from the town to remove certain posts.

DUTCH TOWN TAKES TWITTER TO COURT, DEMANDING REMOVAL OF CONSPIRACY THEORY POSTS

The conspiracy theory, which began circulating on social media in 2020, alleges satanic pedophiles were abusing children in the town in the 1980s. The town has denied the allegations, and the conspiracy theorists offer no evidence for their claims.

Bodegraven-Reeuwijk, a town of 35,000 people, took the social media site to court last month, demanding it remove all content regarding the conspiracy theory.

The stories of the conspiracy theories have allegedly led to people visiting the town and going to the graves of dead children to lay flowers and write notes.
