An eight-year-old girl died in Border Patrol custody in Harlingen, Texas, on Wednesday due to a medical emergency.

The child, who was a migrant, was in custody with her family when the medical emergency occurred, Customs and Border Protection announced. CBP added emergency medical services were called to the Harlingen Station and transported her to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“Consistent with CBP protocol, the Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting an investigation of the incident,” the CBP said as part of its statement. “The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General and the Harlingen Police Department were also notified.”

The child’s death appears to be the first death of a child in border custody since 2019, according to Hamed Aleaziz of the Los Angeles Times. In that circumstance, a 16-year-old Guatemalan boy died, leading several politicians to blame the Trump administration’s immigration policies and vow to investigate.
