Twitter's new CEO Elon Musk says that he wasn't involved in restoring Kanye West's blocked account on his newly acquired platform.

Twitter’s new CEO Elon Musk says that he wasn’t involved in restoring Kanye West’s blocked account on his newly acquired platform.

“Twitter will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints,” Musk wrote Friday. “No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes.”

When a user asked Musk why West’s account, who is also known as Ye, was reactivated, the CEO clarified, “Ye’s account was restored by Twitter before the acquisition. They did not consult with or inform me.”

The rapper was temporarily suspended for 19 days after an antisemitic tweet that violated the platform’s rules. That same week, Ye was banned from Instagram for posting screenshots of his texts that contained antisemitic sentiments.

“I’m a bit sleepy tonight but when I wake up I’m going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE,” the since-removed tweet that initiated the suspension read. “The funny thing is I actually can’t be Anti Semitic because black people are actually Jew also You guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda.”

Musk has claimed to be a “free speech absolutist,” while promising that the platform will not become a “free speech hellscape.”
