Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams has set up a legal defense fund amid an inquiry into his 2021 mayoral campaign by federal investigators.

The Eric Adams Legal Defense Trust will allow the mayor to collect donations to pay for legal bills in accordance with New York City laws. The fund will allow Adams to accept donations of up to $5,000, with the names and addresses of any contributor giving $100 subject to a quarterly report by the Conflicts of Interest Board.

The legal fund “is necessitated by, and intended to defray, legal expenses in connection with the inquiries by the office of United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York related to the operations of the Eric Adams 2021 mayoral campaign committee,” according to an affidavit signed by Adams.

The fund will not allow any donor to be a subordinate of Adams or someone doing business with the city, per city laws.

Adams is under investigation over allegations that he pressured New York City Fire Department officials on behalf of the Turkish government, according to the New York Times. The New York City mayor had several of his electronic devices seized by the FBI last week in an action reportedly related to the ongoing investigation.

“As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any sort of investigation — and I will continue to do exactly that. I have nothing to hide,” Adams said in a statement to the Washington Examiner after reports circulated that his devices had been temporarily seized by the FBI.

Adams’s chief fundraiser Brianna Suggs had her home raided by the FBI earlier this month, where agents allegedly took two laptops, several papers, a “manila folder labeled Eric Adams,” and a number of “contribution card binders.”
