Jesus Revolution producer Kevin Downes believes the recent success of several faith-based films is indicative of a “hunger” for more entertainment containing “themes of hope and unity and love.”
“If audiences come and they show up and they show that they have a hunger for it, then more of that content will continue to get made,” Downes told the Washington Examiner. “Some of these smaller releases that have gotten some traction in theaters and really doing a nice box-office number, it becomes very encouraging as a whole — the entire market.”
HIS ONLY SON MAKES HISTORY AS NEARLY 20,000 TICKETS GIFTED IN ‘PAY-IT-FORWARD’ FASHION
Jesus Revolution, which features Frasier star Kelsey Grammer in the role of Southern California pastor Chuck Smith, who invites hippies into his church, beginning the real-life Christian movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, has now grossed nearly $52 million domestically.
Biblical film His Only Son also surprised the box office, taking the No. 3 spot in its opening weekend and now grossing more than $12 million worldwide.
David, another biblical film, is also breaking records for crowdfunding and is set to hit the screen with a worldwide theatrical release in 2025.
Downes said the success of these films shows how rewarding it is to “focus on themes of hope and unity and love, you know, in a time period where we think our country really needs it.”
