A far-right German politician has come under scrutiny after posting a photo on social media that appears to show him dancing on top of the country’s Holocaust memorial.

Holger Winterstein, a member of the far-right Alternative for Germany party and a representative from Thuringia, posted a photo last week posing with outstretched arms as he stood upon one of the stone slabs at the country’s Holocaust memorial located in Berlin. The photo was taken after an Alternative for Germany protest that was held on Saturday, according to local reports.

The photo prompted widespread criticism, with some denouncing the move as bringing “shame upon himself and his party.”

“Mr. Winterstein, everyone is watching you dance while you bring shame on yourself and your party,” said Ron Prosor, Israel’s ambassador to Germany. “Enjoy your shameful minute of fame because your name will soon be forgotten. The sanctified souls commemorated at the memorial will never be forgotten.”

Members of the Alternative for Germany party also decried the move, noting it would take action against Winterstein for his “extremely disrespectful behavior.”

Winterstein rejected the accusations, arguing he did not “dance on graves” but rather “stood on the monument.”

“The [Alternative for Germany] stands for exactly peace and freedom,” he said in a Facebook post. “That’s exactly why I’m with it from the beginning. It was a nice picture in this regard but [it has] led to self reflection.”

The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin is a memorial for the more than 6 million Jews who were killed by the Nazis during World War II. The memorial is one of the most-visited places in the country.
