Officials launched a probe into the letters just days after state officials in Tennessee and Kansas also alerted law enforcement after they said they also received similar letters, allegedly containing a yet-to-be-determined substance.

The FBI has since concluded that lab tests did not indicate any risk to public safety.

Montana Gov. Greg Gianoforte (R) described the news as ‘disturbing,’ upon hearing about the letters. Montana’s attorney general, Austin Knudsen, took to Facebook in stating that the local sheriff’s office collected evidence after the his mother, also a state representative, opened a letter which he claimed contained a “white powder substance”—delivered to her personal residence.

Knudsen advised the public to “PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS about opening your mail.” “If you receive a suspicious package, contact law enforcement immediately,” he added.

Data from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation reports roughly one-hundred such letters have been delivered to lawmakers and public officials across the state, but have not resulted in any injuries.
