Stewart was reportedly a member of Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Services during World War II.

Congress created WAVES during the war in 1942. Positions within the program included clerical roles, aviation instructors, intelligence specialists, various scientists, and even engineers. The program differed from the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in that WAVES was granted full military status and its members thus received full benefits.

Stewart told Ellen Fuller, the volunteer co-chairwoman for Wreaths Across America Brazos Valley, that she and her husband met at a USO event in 1943. The couple married three years later.

“She and her husband had met at a USO function, and they shared a strong faith which held them together,” Fuller explained.

The organization reportedly provided 100 American flags for Stewart on her big day and collected birthday cards as well.
