Within the last 10 years, the number of fires has fluctuated. 2019 saw the fewest at just over 32,000, but they burned almost four million acres.

As of the center’s most recent report, there were 82 active fires across 16 states. These active fires have burned 638,633 acres or about a third of the total reported.

This report comes as Hawaii has suffered several fires, with three currently mostly contained while one was successfully extinguished. Hawaii has lost over 3,300 acres to the wildfires.
