The woman behind two of the biggest movie soundtrack songs of the 1980s has died.
Irene Cara, best known for her vocals on the title tracks to Fame and Flashdance, died at her home in Florida, according to a statement posted on her Twitter.
“This is the absolute worst part of being a publicist. I can’t believe I’ve had to write this, let alone release the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I’ll be reading each and every one of them and know she’ll be smiling from Heaven. She adored her fans,” Judith Moore with JM Media Group wrote.

“Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their grief. She was a beautifully gifted soul whose legacy will live forever through her music and films. Funeral services are pending and a memorial for her fans will be planned at a future date,” the statement continued.
In 1980, Cara starred as Coco Hernandez in Fame. She recorded the title track, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year.
Cara also co-wrote and sang “Flashdance…What a feeling” for the film Flashdance. She won an Academy Award and a Grammy for the song in 1984.

Cara was born in the Bronx, New York, and was the youngest of five children. Prior to her successes on the big screen, Cara starred on PBS’s Electric Company in the early 1970s as a member of the show’s band, The Short Circus.
The cause of death is not known.
