California‘s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will send the first payment for September worth up to $1,751 to residents in one day.
CalFresh benefits, known federally as SNAP benefits, start on the first of the month and run through Nov. 10. Payments will be distributed depending on the recipient’s case number. For example, if a case number ends in 1, California recipients can expect to see their CalFresh benefits on Nov. 1. If a case number ends in 2, they’ll be available on Nov. 2. The payment dates continue until Nov. 10, when those with a case number ending in 0 will receive their payment.

The amount of benefits an eligible household receives depends on multiple factors, including household size, income limits, and additional assets. Most California households with a monthly gross income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level will qualify for SNAP. The maximum payment is $291 for a household of one, $973 for a household of four, and $1,751 for a household of eight. Up to $219 is added to a household’s food stamps for each member after eight.
SNAP payments are issued on an electronic benefits transfer card. The card can be used to buy grocery items at participating stores to buy eligible products such as meat and poultry, fruits, vegetables, bread, and drinks. SNAP cannot be used to purchase alcohol, cleaning supplies, or pet food.
