While the WIC and SNAP programs are similar in certain ways and require applicants to file in the state in which they currently live, the benefits are independent of each other.

What is the difference between SNAP and WIC?

SNAP is a federal program that provides benefits to low-income families on a monthly supplemental card.

SNAP recipients use a preloaded Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. It is loaded with a monthly amount determined by the applicant’s household income. The card is used for groceries, ensuring homes can afford food essentials for their health and well-being.

WIC does not give a dollar amount to buy groceries but provides foods that are based on nutritional value and USDA standards. Recipients are given a WIC card. Benefits are loaded each month, and the card is swiped like a debit or credit card. Foods eligible under WIC will be subtracted from the buyers’ total.

How do I apply for both?

Eligibility requirements for SNAP and WIC programs vary, and each is managed by states.

To qualify for SNAP, an applicant’s gross and net income must meet state requirements depending on family size, which can be looked up through the United States Department of Agriculture’s food and nutrition services. To apply for SNAP, people seeking food assistance must contact their state agency using the USDA state directory map.

WIC is a short-term program designated to pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding individuals and homes with infants or children below the age of five. Applicant’s income must also be at or below the requirements the state agency issues. To apply for WIC, individuals can send an inquiry through their state’s program contact or go to the WIC Directory.

Those who already qualify for SNAP, Medicaid, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may automatically be eligible for WIC benefits.
