Food stamps are reloaded each month onto an electronic benefits transfer card, which works like a debit card. Recipients can use the money at participating grocery stores and farmers markets, as well as some online retailers. Food and fresh produce items can be purchased, and so can seeds and plants to grow food.

If a recipient is homeless or unable to cook, SNAP benefits can be used at some participating restaurants in the state. Some Meals on Wheels kitchens also accept food stamps.
