The average payment per household member per month is $171. Approximately 413,700 people, or 14% of the population, receive food stamps in the Buckeye State.

For a household of one, the maximum benefit is $281. A household of three can collect up to $740, and a household of five can receive up to $1,116. An additional $211 is included for each member over eight.

The arrival of a household’s SNAP benefits depends on the last digit of the case number. In Ohio, payments are sent out on the second and 20th of the month.

The card, similar to a debit or ATM card, can be used at approved stores and farmers markets. Food stamps are intended for groceries, such as bread, cereal, fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, dairy, “snack foods,” and nonalcoholic beverages. SNAP recipients can also purchase seeds and plants to grow food.

SNAP recipients are eligible for free classes on healthy eating, smart shopping, and staying active, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The classes are provided by the department and The Ohio State University.
