Cities across the nation are swapping out Independence Day firework shows for drone shows.
Galveston, Texas; North Lake Tahoe and Imperial Beach, California; and Castle Pines, Colorado, will use lit drones to celebrate the Fourth of July this year. While Massachusetts is the only state that bans all consumer fireworks, cities nationwide with high fire risks are also outright banning fireworks to prevent risk.
Lake Tahoe has banned fireworks across its basin, Galveston won’t allow fireworks on its beaches or within city limits, and Imperial Beach doesn’t allow fireworks on its sands. Personal fireworks aren’t allowed in Castle Pines either.

Drone shows have appeared at Tennessee’s Dollywood and recently at the SNF Nostos Festival in June. A video captured their second appearance at the festival.
“We’ve fielded hundreds of requests that we, unfortunately, can’t take,” founder and CEO of drone company Hireuavpro.com Graham Hill said. His company will rent anywhere from 100 to 500 drones for $2,000 to $25,000.

Still, the fireworks industry earned $262 million in revenue from public displays and $2.2 billion from consumer purchases last year, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association.
