Several Russian officials have resigned from their posts as economic sanctions against the country continue to grow in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
Four Russian regional governors resigned on Tuesday. The heads of the Tomsk, Saratov, Kirov, and Mari El regions announced they were immediately departing their offices, according to Reuters. The governor of the Ryazan region also announced he would not run for another term.
The reasons offered by the governors regarding their resignation specifically mentioned their age or the fact that they had been in office for a long time, according to the DPA News Agency.

Several Russians have speculated the governors didn’t provide the actual reasons for their resignations. Some argued on Telegram the resignations may have been because the governors did not want to continue supporting the invasion of Ukraine. Others claimed it could be that the governors were not loyal to the Kremlin.
While governors are typically elected by their constituents, they are required to obey the Kremlin. These sorts of resignations are not uncommon, as unpopular governors often submit their resignations in spring, according to Reuters. Elections for the next wave of governors are scheduled for September.

Sanctions against Russia have continued to squeeze the country. Members of the G-7 announced new sanctions on Sunday that would limit Moscow’s ability to export goods, spread propaganda, and access the oil and gas industry.
While Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that Russia can withstand the West’s sanctions, other experts believe the effects of the war could have immense impacts inside Russia and outside it.
