The latest 2024 Republican candidate for president, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, revealed his support for a nationwide abortion ban.
Suarez explained his stance to the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, expressing he would support a ban if it came after 15 weeks and had exceptions for the life of the mother, rape, and incest. Previously, he had not expressed his opinion on abortion until he launched his presidential campaign.

This stance puts Suarez with the likes of former Vice President Mike Pence and Sen Tim Scott (R-SC), who have expressed similar opinions. The 2024 election will be the first presidential election since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade a year ago, eliminating nationwide protection for the procedure.
In the Senate, Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has proposed a nationwide ban at 15 weeks. Some Senate Republicans support Graham’s effort, but many of the caucus oppose it, most notably Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Meanwhile, a majority of people agree with Suarez about banning abortion after a certain period. According to a June Gallup poll, only 37% of the country believes abortion should be legal in the second trimester, or after 15 weeks, while 55% say it should be illegal.
The Democratic National Committee started its attacks on Suarez immediately following his announcement, calling him “another contender in the race for the MAGA base” and sharing the news about his abortion stance online.
