A freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed Monday morning in Whitemarsh Township, prompting “precautionary” evacuations of nearby homes as officials rushed to assess the damage.

According to freight operator CSX, 16 cars on the 40-car freight train derailed, one of which was carrying hazardous materials. CSX also said there is no known hazard to the public, though hazmat crews had been called in as a precaution.

Police said the derailment happened Monday morning shortly before 5 a.m.

“As of now, the only thing that is leaking from any of the rail cars involved is silicone pellets, which pose no risk to the community,” police said in a statement.

“My team and I are monitoring the train derailment in Whitemarsh Twp and assisting local first responders,” Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) tweeted.

“Thank you to the residents taking precautions at the direction of local authorities. I urge you to continue following their instruction,” he said.
