Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) has joined Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) leadership team as an informal adviser, a spokesman for the first-term senator told the Washington Examiner on Wednesday.

Speculation about Britt’s involvement in leadership emerged on Monday when the freshman Republican was spotted entering McConnell’s office for his weekly 5 p.m. strategy meeting with senior advisers. Britt, 41, served as chief of staff to her predecessor, GOP Sen. Richard Shelby, before her 2022 election victory.

“I’ve always said that my goal is to ensure Alabama has the best possible seat at the table in the Senate, so our state’s people, values, and interests can be represented effectively and strongly. I’m proud to be delivering on my pledge to Alabamians,” Britt said in a statement on her ascension to leadership. “I also believe that I bring to the table a critical perspective and voice that is often missing in D.C. — that of the next generation of conservative leaders and that of moms with school-aged children.”

McConnell’s leadership team includes Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-SD), Senate GOP Conference Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY), Senate GOP Policy Committee Chairwoman Joni Ernst (R-IA), Republican Conference Vice Chairwoman Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT), and allies such as Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Deb Fischer (R-NE).

The Kentucky Republican, 81, is the longest-serving Senate leader in U.S. history.

Britt secured an impressive set of committee assignments for a freshman member, including the top Republican spot on the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on homeland security. A first-term lawmaker earning the top spot on any panel is an impressive feat on its own, though Britt gained extensive experience working with the Appropriations Committee from Shelby’s tenure as chairman.

In addition to Appropriations, Britt serves alongside McConnell on the exclusive Senate Rules Committee. She also has a seat on the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.
