EXCLUSIVE — Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas requesting information on an illegal immigrant from Nicaragua who crashed into a police officer in Virginia while drunk.
On Aug. 19, while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, Yacarely Diaz-Castro crashed her vehicle into a Chesapeake police officer conducting a traffic stop, according to local reports. The officer suffered several serious injuries, including a fractured skull and a C6 vertebrae fracture.

She was charged with DUI maiming, driving without a license, and failing to move over for a stationary vehicle with warning lights.
Diaz-Castro had come into the country illegally and claimed she had received a “notice to report” form from the Department of Homeland Security, something that Gaetz wants answers about from Mayorkas.
“This document, while itself an unlawful papering over of your open-border policies, does mandate a recipient report to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within 60 days, at which point the illegal alien should begin removal proceedings by receiving a ‘Notice to Appear,’” Gaetz said in the letter.

In light of this, the Florida Republican is asking the department to provide him with Diaz-Castro’s immigration status on Aug. 18, when, to the best of authorities’ knowledge, she crossed the border illegally and if she reported to ICE. He is also asking DHS how many people who cross the border illegally fail to comply with their “notice to report” forms, what steps DHS takes to remove those who fail to comply with their “notice to report” forms, and how many law enforcement officers and first responders have been injured by illegal immigrants in the past two years.
Gaetz is giving Mayorkas until Oct. 2 to comply with his request.
