California Gov. Gavin Newsom is headed to the nation’s capital to receive an award on behalf of his home state as 2024 speculation continues.
California is the recipient of the 2022 Frank Newman Award for State Innovation “in recognition of its coordinated approach to educating all students from preschool to postsecondary, with explicit attention toward whole-child supports and services, as well as its historic financial investments to ensure educational equity.”

“California educates nearly one-eighth of all public school students in the nation, and its major initiatives have been focused on recognition of, and support for, the unique needs of students today,” said the Education Commission of the States in a press release.
Speculation over the governor’s political future ramped up after he launched a commercial ad campaign in Florida, inviting residents to live in California instead. “Freedom, it’s under attack in your state. Republican leaders, they’re banning books, making it harder to vote, restricting speech in classrooms, even criminalizing women and doctors,” Newsom says in the ad.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was not shy about responding to the perceived attack. “As he was locking down his citizens, he would then go and have these extravagant dinners at the French Laundry to basically rub his citizen’s noses in the fact that he was treating them like peasants,” he said. “You know in Florida we weren’t locking them down, we lifted our people up. We made sure to protect individual’s freedoms.”
