A protest in honor of Palestinians who have died in Gaza shut down traffic in both directions on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago on Saturday.
Protesters from two organizations, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network and the Coalition for Justice in Palestine, lined up on the road to block traffic for hours. The groups were protesting the Biden administration for bypassing congressional approval twice to use its emergency powers to sell ammunition to Israel.

“WE SAY NO!” CJP wrote on Facebook ahead of the protest. “THIS MUST STOP NOW! Two weeks ago, CJP supporters blocked Lakeshore Drive in front of Senator Dick Durbins home and he actually came out to insult us with his politically loaded lies! Tomorrow, we’ll be in front of his home again to tell him that we DO NOT ACCEPT HIS HYPOCRISY! WE DEMAND JUSTICE NOW!”
Sen. Durbin (D-IL) has long advocated for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as early as a month after Hamas initially invaded Israel with foot soldiers and fired thousands of rockets.
Durbin’s office did not return the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
Chicago Police arrested two protesters amid the standoff, but both were released the same day. In pictures and videos captured online, most protesters are seen simply standing on the road with signs that read: “Stop US funding of Israel’s genocide” and “Palestinian resistance is justified when our people are occupied.”

As Lake Shore Drive is along the route of many Chicago Transit Authority buses, locals should expect public transportation delays.
The USPCN has plans to host a vigil for Palestinians on Sunday.
