Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) said he plans to endorse a 2024 Republican presidential candidate “in the next few weeks.”

“We’re all friends. We’re all tight. I think they would all make great presidents,” Sununu said in an interview on CBS News Tuesday evening. “I really do. I’ll narrow it down and get behind one in the next few weeks.”

Former Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) have both campaigned with Sununu recently, sparking speculation that the New Hampshire governor will throw his support behind one of the two candidates.

“I think Nikki Haley has done very well,” Sununu said, noting the importance of the field narrowing. “I think Ron DeSantis has really held his own, nationally in the second place position. Some candidates have kind of surged and faded a little bit. Some that were on the stage aren’t on the stage.”

Haley pushed for Sununu’s endorsement on Thursday in Londonderry, New Hampshire, asking the governor of the key swing state if he’ll endorse her in front of a large crowd.

“Getting closer every day. Getting closer every day,” Sununu said.

At the end of October, DeSantis also appeared in New Hampshire campaigning with Sununu, who praised the Florida governor’s politics.

Although DeSantis and Haley are trailing far behind former President Donald Trump, Sununu said he’s confident a Republican contender can beat him, noting Trump is not polling above 50% with his home base in early voting states such as New Hampshire.

“I think I’ll work hard to kinda spend a little more time with some of the other candidates and figure something out, you know, shortly after Thanksgiving,” Sununu said.

New Hampshire holds the first primary and second overall contest on the 2024 Republican nominating calendar, and all GOP White House hopefuls show up to the state early and often.

“Now in Iowa and New Hampshire, the voters are very smart. They’re very independent minded, they’ll consider your endorsement, but at the end of the day they’re gonna make their own decision because we meet the candidates, we engage with them, we don’t have party bosses telling us what to think and do,” Sununu said.
