Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) declared Florida the “anti-New York” and “anti-California” during a press conference on Wednesday.

According to the Florida governor, his state’s bail laws and support of free speech for physicians places it in stark contrast with New York and California, which are led by Democratic politicians.

“Our Florida bail, tough-on-bail [laws], is anti-New York. Supporting free speech physicians, kind of anti-California,” he explained at the press conference in Jupiter, Florida.

He also alluded to the national media attention on himself, particularly coming out of those states.

“I get out of bed — I roll out of bed in the morning — the media’s having a spasm. The Left has a spasm,” he said.

“Honestly, it just shows you that you’re over the target,” DeSantis added.

According to him, “If you have New York media outlets worried about me in Florida, they’re not doing that for their health.

“They understand that what we’re doing in Florida, you know, we represent a threat to leftism in this country because we’re defeating leftism in the state of Florida,” he told reporters.

California’s governor, Gavin Newsom (D-CA), has been a harsh critic of DeSantis and his policies. The Democratic politician recently took a trip to the state where he visited New College — the subject of DeSantis’s campaign to root out Left-wing bias at public universities.

On Tuesday, Newsom said he is making trips to red states because “We’re at a moment, and I can’t just sit back passively.”

He further accused Florida and other Republican-led states of conducting “a rights regression.”

According to the California governor, “I feel accountable, and I feel the need to call it out. I feel the need to go on the offense and not consistently be on the defense, and I feel the need to wake everybody up to what the hell is going on in the United States of America.”

DeSantis is expected to launch a bid for the White House in 2024 this summer, something the campaign of former President Donald Trump has gotten out ahead of, releasing ads targeting the Florida governor.

Despite his unannounced status, DeSantis is the second-highest polling potential candidate in a hypothetical 2024 Republican primary, with 22%. Trump still leads the field with a whopping 56%, however, per Morning Consult.
