PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL GARNERS FINAL WEATHER DISCOVERY CENTER HALL OF FAME INDUCTION

Groundhog Day tradition is that if the day is cloudy and Phil cannot see his shadow it is a sign of an early spring, yet if the prognosticator does see its shadow six more weeks of winter are in store.

Last year, Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter. Records dating back to 1887 indicated that the groundhog has predicted an extended winter more than 100 times.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac suggested December and January’s temperatures would be very cold while February would bring “near-normal winter season temperatures overall.” It also noted that March could see “a wide variety of weather conditions, ranging from heavy snows to torrents of rain and gusty thunderstorms across much of the nation.”

Buffalo Bert, a groundhog hailing from Buffalo, New York, saw his shadow during a ceremony last weekend and suggested six more weeks of winter.
